Thank you!
PRK would
like to thank you for an incredibly successful meeting on Oct. 17th. By
media estimates about 150 people attended, with about 100 in support.
Of the 50+ speakers, only 5 were against the bylaw!
You still
have until October 31st to have your say. The City has set up an email
to communicate your support for a strong, no-loopholes bylaw similar to
Peterborough's "gold standard". Whether you attended the meeting
on Oct.17th or not, please try to send an email of support for a strong
bylaw to the following email address: pesticidebylaw@cityofkingston.ca
You should try to focus on the details of the bylaw. Please try to voice
your support for a bylaw free of loopholes for trees, shrubs, gardens
and paved areas.
Again, thank you for making it possible for the EIT committee to recommend
a strong bylaw for City Council to approve!
Province considering following municipal lead on pesticides
Sept. 1st,
2007
Sources within
the Ontario Liberal party say that they are preparing to announce that
they will ban the retail sale and use of pesticides for urban use on lawns
if re-elected. This has been received as wonderful news by many environmental
groups if it proves to be reliable and genuine. It would parallel the
same legislative path that was blazed during the anti-smoking campaign
several years ago. Then as now, as municipalities blazed the legislative
trail, the province followed in their footsteps. Click

City
Council and EI&T Committee vote to draft cosmetic pesticide bylaw!
On January 9th 2007 Council voted unanimously to direct
the Environment, Infrastructure, and Transportation standing committee
to make recommendations on a bylaw to eliminate the use of cosmetic pesticides
by May 1st. At the first meeting of the committee (Feb. 8th), members
voted unanimously to direct city staff to present 5 different bylaw models,
including the Peterborough model as potential candidates. Councillors
need to hear from you now that Kingston needs the best bylaw possible,
one that is fair and effective. Tell your councillor Kingston needs the
Peterborough bylaw.

Toronto - The Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP)
is strongly recommending that people reduce their exposure to pesticides
wherever possible after releasing a comprehensive review of research on
the effects of pesticides on human health. Released today, the review
shows consistent links to serious illnesses such as cancer, reproductive
problems and neurological diseases, among others. The study also shows
that children are particularly vulnerable to pesticides.
