Much is NOT known about pesticide toxicity:

  • Multiple component toxicity, testing is often done on a single compound in isolation.
  • No testing is done on total product formulation including so-called "inert ingredients".
  • Toxicity testing has NOT been done on most active ingredients for susceptibility of women and children
  • There is cause for concern regarding the non-lethal effects such as memory loss, hand-eye coordination, diminution of IQ.  Quantitative studies have yet to be done.

Much IS known:
  • Combinations of pesticides CAN be more toxic than when tested in isolation
  • Health Canada relies on corporate data and does no independent testing of pesticides
  • Pesticides CAN be brought into your house via shoe-based contamination* following application.
  • There is some evidence that organophosphates(insecticide) can affect IQ, hand-eye coordination, and memory of children **as seen on the Nature of Things' Toxic Legacies episode.

There are safer methods:

  • To control weeds
  • To control pests
  • To maintain nutrient levels

Why not use the Precautionary Principle?

In the absence of scientific certainty, err on the side of caution.

Let's put the onus on the pesticide industry to prove that they're SAFE instead of the public having to prove that they're UNSAFE.
